Q:I’m coaching the Back to Nature (geology) contest.
In our coaches meeting in early February we were given an address of a rock quarry that could be visited to find rock specimens. I lost my notes and was wondering if anyone could give me the address.
A. I have heard several times that the Fox Science Preserve (https://www.washtenaw.org/Facilities/Facility/Details/Fox-Science-7) is a good place to go to observe several different types of rocks. It is a former gravel pit, and there are many glacial erratics. The land, which in the past was privately owned, is now public, and they do not allow people (including kids) to collect rocks.
There is also a mineral show coming up in March, in case the coaches are willing to travel a little:
