A2: For the third grade question, the kids need to measure as close as they can. I will give the kids points for having the correct answer if they are within close range of the answer.
Q1: Do second graders need to know longitude and latitude? What about topography?
A1: Second grade does need to know longitude and latitude, but they do not need to know topography.
Q2: I am coaching map reading for 3rd grade and have a question. When using scale to calculate distance, how exact do kids need to measure on the ruler? Is it to the nearest 1/2 inch, 1/4 inch, etc? I’m trying to figure out how to help my kids translate that into the scale. (I.e. If 1 inch = 400 miles, then every 1/4 inch is 100 miles). Thanks for any direction you can offer.
