How to form a WESO Team

Are you a school administrator, teacher, or parent interested in forming a team for the first time? Here are some steps to get started.

1.     Visit the WESO website at: to learn more about the Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad and its  mission.

2.     Recruit a Head Coach for your school. A head coach does not “coach” all the events but is the main organizer for your school’s team and serves as the point of contact between the WESO Board and your school.

3.     Email the WESO Board at, with the name of your school’s Head Coach, email address, and phone number so that we can add them to our internal contact list as well as the School Head Coach distribution list. The WESO Board primarily communicates with school head coaches via email so having this information as soon as possible is important.

4.     Start spreading the word about WESO in your school community. Not sure how to do this? Let us know and we can help by providing suggestions and example communications.

5.     Start recruiting parents, teachers, and community members who are willing to coach a team of students at your school and help them prepare for individual events. (Tentative event slate for 2023 will be released in October).

6.     Attend the WESO Head Coach information meeting in the  fall (tentatively scheduled for November via Zoom). Be sure to check the WESO website often as important WESO-related meeting dates will be posted there.

7.     Register your school for the 2023 tournament. Registration will open in December. The link to the online registration form will be sent via email to the School’s head coach  in early-mid Fall as well as posted on our website.

Following these  early steps will help you begin organizing a school team. While there is a lot to do to put together a team, the WESO Board is here to lend support when needed. Please email us with any questions, and share your contact information so that a WESO Board member may contact you. In addition, plan to attend the WESO Head Coach meeting, where many aspects of the Head Coach position will be shared.

* All public and private schools and school groups within Washtenaw County are welcome to register for our annual tournament. Acceptance is dependent upon completion of the full registration process.
