Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah: Harness to be used during competition.

At the first Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah practice session, a couple of teams showed up with cable car harnesses from 2019 or earlier. In 2020, the design was changed to be larger, and new harnesses were passed out to teams.  This year, four additional harnesses were passed out to each school that requested them. The current harness, ond the one that will be used in competition, is approximately 1.5″ x 3.0″.

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah: REMINDER Zip Practice Sessions.

WESO would like to remind schools that we are holding a second Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah practice sessions on May 14 in the Program room of the Ann Arbor District Library, Pittsfield Branch (2359 Oak Valley Dr., Ann Arbor, MI  48103). We are inviting each team that has not already done so to sign up for a one-hour long slot.  Note: we are defining a team as ONE grade from ONE school. Each team is limited to one coach and three competitors. To maximize social distancing, other attendees will not be admitted into the program room (but may enjoy the library).

During this practice session, the WESO competition equipment, including timing systems, will be set up. Dimensions/angles utilized on this equipment may not be the same as they will be on competition day, but will be within the window of conditions outlined in the event description, and disclosed to the participants. Using their own harnesses, tools and supplies, teams are able to construct cable cars and run them down the zip line. Teams will then have an opportunity to make multiple changes to their cable cars and see the impact on zip line times.  Students may also be able to practice/be coached on releasing their cable cars in a repeatable manner.
The event supervisors will not be present, but WESO will have a copy of the event description on hand and will attempt to answer any questions asked. Any questions that cannot be answered readily from the event description will be forwarded to the event supervisors.

Currently, the library requests that masks be worn. Coaches will be responsible for sanitizing table work surfaces prior to their teams departing (WESO will have sanitizing wipes on hand).

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah: Glue, tape, type of ball used, and harness

Q: What type of glue will be provided to teams at the competition?

A: A glue stick.

Q: What type of tape and how much tape will be provided to teams at competition?

A: Each team will get a roll of adhesive office tape (e.g. Scotch Tape).

Q: Will the ball used at competition be a ping-pong ball or a table tennis ball?  (It looks like there is a slight size difference.)

A: We expect the students to easily adapt to any slight variations in ping pong ball size, weight, or material.

Q: Is the harness used during the build phase the same harness that will be used during their timed runs?

A: Yes.

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah: velocity calculations.

Q: Will kids need to rearrange the average velocity equation for the quiz question? In other words, will they be asked to calculate distance given velocity and time? Asking for fifth graders.

A: For the written assessment for 4th and 5th grades, the students will only be asked to calculate average velocity, given distance and time. They will not be asked to rearrange the equation or solve for other variables (i.e., distance or time).
